You know the vinyl revival is still alive and kicking when Yves Saint Laurent wants to use vinyl to promote their lipsticks!!

Sonata’s very own Rega P3 and limited edition Bowie album in red was perfect for YSL’s beauty feature in the Evening Standard Magazine.

Fashion! Turn to the left. Fashion! Turn to the right. Beep beep…

When Yvonne was asked to contribute to an article about the ‘Women in Hi-Fi’ group, this is what she wrote…

It was so refreshing to meet with the ‘Women in Hifi’ group at the Munich High End show. I found it inspiring that quite a few women made an effort to take an hour out of a busy day to simply say hello and communicate with one another. And, to massage the old cliche’s, there weren’t any conversations about shoes and handbags but more about business, music, sound and design.

There are more women than we think in this male dominated industry but often they are the quieter ones working behind the scenes of many successful brands.

The industry as a whole needs to open up conversations with the female and younger generation market, which at present, it seems to exclude. Surely this limits growth and innovation??

Let’s hope the ‘Women in Hifi’ group goes from strength to strength and helps the overall perceived image of the hifi industry, which unfortunately seems to be tweaky and testosterone driven. A dynamic industry should pay attention to both sexes so let’s bring the hifi industry out of the ‘man cave’ and into the shared homes of men and women simply enjoying music!

Rob (Sonata) with Rega Winner

We are delighted that our limited edition Rega turntable has gone to a good home.

The winning name pulled out of our free prize-draw box was Danny Hughes from Peckham, London. Danny is a keen vinyl collector and was actually looking to buy himself a new deck. He said he has entered our RSD prize draw competition before, so it just goes to show, good things come to those that wait!!!

We’d like to say a big thank you to Phil Barton at Sister Ray for allowing us to run the competition from his shop (for the 4th year running), Alan Sircom at Hi-Fi Plus for popping along and taking some great shots AND to everyone who entered the competition, braved the long queues and continues to keep RSD alive and well.

We had a great time visiting the Bristol Hi-Fi show and catching up with many of our friends.

Highlights included listening to the new Moon Ace, ProAc DB1, Rega P3, Hegel HD30 and dancing in the Renaissance Audio/Totem room.

It was also fab to at finally meet Linette Smith from Hi-Fi Pig and share many stories about living in sunny Sunderland when we were younger!

More details to follow on the fantastic new products that will be coming our way soon…

Hi and welcome to our Music Mix Blog, a corner of our website where we plan to share music news, reviews and general inspiration.

The timing of our new website and music blog leaves no choice but to feature my all time hero, David Bowie and the gloriously beautiful yet unforgiving album ‘Blackstar’.

When Bowie passed away on Sunday 10th January 2016 there was a global awareness and consciousness that brought about a heavy silence across all ages and nationalities. It was truly powerful and something that I haven’t witnessed since being a young kid when the news broke that Elvis Presley had died. I was too young to fully understand the impact this had on the world of popular culture but receptive enough to the gigantic wave of sadness that swept over everyone.

Bowie’s influence has had a profound effect on our world of music, fashion and sexuality and his constant restfulness and innovation within his career has left a path of musical and fashion trends across all of our media. It’s suddenly apparent that a world without his presence and talent will take some adjusting to.

He once admitted to always writing about isolation, abandonment, fear and anxiety and ‘Blackstar’ dishes a euphoric dose of just that.

Seven songs, 41 minutes of unashamedly dark, busy, dislocated, jazz tinged wonder with Bowie’s vocal delivery leaving us with unforgiving ear-worms such as ‘in the centre of it all, your eyes’.

With the album ‘Blackstar’ he had nothing left to prove and unlike Charles Bukowski’s poem ‘Bluebird’, Bowie is now free…

There’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I’m too tough for him,
I say, stay in there, I’m not going to let anybody see you.
There’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I pour whiskey on him and inhale cigarette smoke
And the whores and the bartenders and the grocery clerks never know that he’s in there.

There’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I’m too tough for him,
I say, stay down, do you want to mess me up?
You want to screw up the works?
You want to blow my book sales in Europe?
There’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I’m too clever, I only let him out at night sometimes when everybody’s asleep.
I say, I know that you’re there, so don’t be sad.
Then I put him back, but he’s singing a little in there, I haven’t quite let him die and we sleep together like that with our secret pact
And it’s nice enough to make a man weep, but I don’t
weep, do you?

*Bluebirds have no blue pigments in their feathers. Instead, each feather barb has a thin layer of cells that absorb all wavelengths of color except blue. Only the blue wavelength is reflected and scattered, resulting in their blue appearance to our eyes. They are typically seen as a symbol for happiness.

No sooner had our new Goldmund Prologos speakers arrived than they were being whisked off for an exclusive photo-shoot with GQ Magazine !

We’ve done a few articles for GQ in the past and have become their ‘go to’ hi-fi dealer when they need a bit of high quality kit to be photographed, but this time it was a much more prestigious assignment.

So, Rob duly jumped in a van with the Goldmunds and a gorgeous VPI HRX turntable (itself, fitted with our stunning Kiseki Blue cartridge) and headed off to a very high-end photographic studio in North London.

Our participation was to be for the main two-page spread photo in the annual GQ Luxury supplement, sponsored this year by Bentley Motors.

The hi-fi took centre stage with the HRX sitting proudly on a beautiful Bentley designed cabinet, flanked by the unique Goldmund wireless speakers looking incredible in there iconic ‘Z-Frame’ stands.

Suffice to say, the photographer and the entire GQ design team absolutely adored this amazing turntable and speakers – sexy hi-fi is back!

London based dealer Sonata has been appointed as the exclusive UK distributor for Goldmund, the Swiss luxury audio manufacturer.

Goldmund has taken 35 years of technological expertise and adapted it to launch a completely new range of wireless speakers, offering everything from a compact desktop system, design conscious lifestyle models, all the way up to the iconic limited edition Apologue Anniversary.

Every speaker has been engineered to include all the technological developments made by the Goldmund research team.

This includes the implementation of their Proteus speaker modelling programme and Leonardo2 technology to create speakers that are perfectly aligned for amplitude, phase and time within very powerful DSP filters.

Internal amplification using the very latest version of the acclaimed Telos circuit, Alize D to A conversion, mechanical grounding and aluminium construction are also included in each product.

All Goldmund speakers can either play music directly from a computer using the Goldmund USB dongle or from other sources connected to a Goldmund ‘hub’ such as the Mimesis 11 or Talisman.

As a result of these shared technologies, the Goldmund range of speakers has an extremely consistent musical voice and quality. The only things that improve as you go up the range are the low frequency extension and maximum possible sound pressure levels.

Sonata is delighted to have been specifically chosen by Goldmund to represent their unique products in the UK and has recently exhibited the Prologos wireless speakers to great acclaim at this years’ London Design Festival. These speakers have also been photographed for an upcoming feature in GQ Magazine.

UK Prices range from £5,000 to £500,000
